A Devotion By Pastor Paul Rieger - Senior Pastor
God Calls Us
God Calls us
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.”—Matthew 5:13-15 (ESV)
Salt And Light
In this world today, to be “salty” means to feel frustrated, grumpy or mad. But for Christians, we want to be salty. Not saying we need to be grumpy. Most of us have that one down already. But Christ calls us to be like salt.
Salt was once considered a precious commodity for the preservation of food. But nowadays, with refrigerators, salt is not as needed. Salt for us is important because it enhances the flavor of our food.
Christ calls you to be like salt. He wants you to be valuable and to stand out. Christ also says that you are to be a light. We are all aware of the power of light shining in darkness, especially if we are in a spooky basement. Light cuts through the darkness and alleviates any fear of what may be hiding in the darkness. Christ calls you to be salt and light. You are to be noticeable. You are to enhance. You are to be useful. And you are to cut through the darkness.
Through salvation won for you on the cross, Christ has redeemed you to be a new better salt and light. As you proclaim the gospel message, you will stand out.
