Education Is A Lifelong Experience

September is when, typically, everyone gets back into school. This might be heading off to school or simply having to deal with school schedules. But it’s also a time to consider our education in the church.

We of course have our school, Faribault Lutheran, but many of you are too old to enroll. Sorry! Just one of those realities of life! So what are you doing for your education?

Can An Old Dog Learn New Tricks?

Education is a lifelong experience. The old phrase saying that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks is simply wrong. We’re always learning and growing. And when it comes to our faith, we need to be learning and growing. But just consuming anything and everything, especially when it comes to the faith, can be a very unwise thing. False teachers and false teachings are just as prevalent today as they were in biblical times, and we are not immune to them. So how can we sort the good from the bad?

First and foremost, you need to begin in Scripture. Start with simple things like thebibleproject.com, a site which uses videos to teach overviews of the books of the Bible, and with things like The Message, an adaptation of Scripture to help understand the grand story.

Then move on to the Bible, using a translation you can understand. Dig deep into God’s Word, see who He is, what He has done, and what He calls you to do. And from there join a small group of brothers and sisters, or just brothers or just sisters, and study God’s Word with God’s people.

It’s Never Too Late To Start!

With these all together, you will have built up a great understanding and education to continue to seek and search for wisdom. They will provide you with a foundation, with Christ as the cornerstone, for you to build your life upon. And what is very important to realize is that it’s never too late to start.

Our small groups are warm and welcoming, you can even join mid-year or mid-study. But ultimately, understand this: you need to be educated. You need the knowledge of God. As God Himself says in Psalm 1:1-2, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.”

May God bless you with wisdom as you seek to grow in your under-standing and knowledge of Him.
