God’s Gift of Jesus Christ
The Reason for the Season
It seems our world is getting so cynical. Even in the joyous Christmas season, we only hear cynicism. Rather than rejoicing in people’s generosity to one another, we throw around statements like, “Jesus is the reason for the season.” Sure that’s true, but is that how we should speak? Maybe I’m just being cynical myself, but I think we need to change the conversation.
The season of Christmas for so many has changed in to a season of gift giving. We see people going crazy shopping for others, trying to get the best gifts. It can be a bit frustrating for us Christians to look out and see this happening, when we know that there is greater purpose to this holy season, but maybe we should change our conversations to lead others to knowledge of Christ. Paul says it well in Ephesians 2:8, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” Grace is the gift and Jesus is the gift.
What To Do?
So when talking this holiday season we can speak less about the reason for the season and more about the gift. This is also a great opportunity to live that grace too, especially in your families. You can talk about God’s gift of Jesus Christ with your kids or grandkids, as you give them other gifts. (You can’t get them nothing and then say Jesus is the gift!) You have opportunities to share the good news while you share an opening prayer at your Christmas meal.
My point is this: in a world that seems to be somehow getting more evil, don’t add to that with cynicism. Don’t try and act morally superior. Rather use this time to spread the gospel. Use the language of the culture to change the conversation. Talk of the gifts of God, especially that of Christ for the sins of all people.
